Henry Jenkins’s “Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture”

1. What is gained and lost by re-conceiving teaching in terms of gaming? What might be obscured, for instance, by the example of asking students to imagine what would have happened if “Native Americans had colonized Europe” (24)?

2. Jenkins argues that a “participatory culture” requires a proper new media education, which will equip students to succeed in the marketplace. To what extent should education continue to value and attempt to teach skills no longer prized by the market? Jenkins defends the value of multi-tasking (35), for instance, but does doing so sacrifice teaching students how to focus their attention on a single task?

3. Which of Jenkins criteria–Play, Performance, Simulation, Appropriation, Multitasking, Distributed Cognition, Collective Intelligence, Judgment, Transmedia Navigation, Networking, Negotiation–seem the most relevant to first year writing?
