Character Design

For our first project, I wanted students to think about how illustrators convey character traits through visual cues.

I gave students two options for this project:

OPTION 1: For this assignment, you will start creating a protagonist. Think about both how this character looks—facial features, physique, attire, gear—and who they are. What are their core traits? What motivates them? You will create at least two annotated images of your character from different angles.

OPTION 2: Analyze one of the characters from a comic we’ve read in class—how are they designed? What do they wear and what does it say about them? Who are they as a person? What drives them? Include images of your chosen character in your discussion.
